CHAPTER 10

She could not believe she was doing this. Edie looked down at her reflection after Blakely and his boyfriend had left, shocked at the transformation. It wasn’t that she didn’t look like herself. Edie was very clear that she only wanted help with selecting the right outfit and hairdo. But Brandon was an artist.

Once he’d started playing with her hair, insisting she allow him to shape her long locks without compromising the length, there was no going back.

Blakely had, of course, done what she’d asked. Sort of. She had told him to go get her some outfit choices for her to try on, charging them to her account at The Treasure Box, a local boutique, but he’d done more than that.

He’d shopped for everything from the honey scented lotion she loved, to sexy thongs, demi-cup bras, and clothes she’d never dared wear with her hips.

In the end, he’d been right. The paisley print dress was exactly the kind of thing she always admired in varying shades of blue and purple, and it looked great on her. As had the red, and the navy two-piece suits. But she’d chosen the long black skirt with tiny white flowers dancing across it and paired it with a knit top that hugged her curves.

She looked good for dinner, and not ridiculously fancy or overdressed. Besides, Niels would see right through her if she did anything like that. Blakely was miffed when she didn’t go for the heels, but she knew what she liked, and she liked her red flats with the peekaboo toes.

When she’d opened the door for Niels, she’d tried for casual, but the big man just stared at her, making her squirm.

Maybe she should have gone for sexier?

But as soon as she thought about it, he opened his mouth.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

So, yeah, Edie was glad she went with her choices. As a Shifter, she knew he could tell if she were being dishonest. Pretending to be something she wasn’t just wouldn’t sit right with her.

Not now, not ever.

“Where are we going?” Edie asked, stepping into the hall and forcing him to back up a step.

“You’ll see,” he said, grinning.

He waited for her to walk in front of him, raising his eyebrows when she’d gestured for him to lead. Niels would never be so careless as to leave her strolling behind him. That was something she remembered, and it warmed her as she stepped in front of the big man.

The heat from his body made her shiver slightly as he walked behind her. And she hoped he missed that little telltale giveaway.

“Cold?”

“Nope. Just fine,” she lied.

Edie wasn’t fine.

She was anything but.

Living with Niels had been hell on her nerves. Dreaming about being with him had been one of the constants of her youth, and that hadn’t changed. She lived in constant fear she’d call his name during one of her more erotic fantasies and was grateful she hadn’t.

So far.

But maybe this dinner was a bad idea all around.

After all, what
